How Long Does It Take to Rank on Google? Real Data From Pages Published Last Week

Two days for your own product name. Six months for a competitive keyword. Here is the real data, including the part nobody mentions: page one earned eighteen impressions.

The honest answer is that "how long does it take to rank on Google" is really two different questions with two very different answers, and almost every article about it only answers the hard one.

Ranking for your own product's name can take two days. We have the data below, from real listings published last week.

Ranking for a competitive keyword takes months, and no amount of technical work shortcuts it.

Most guides quote the second number, three to six months, and stop. That is accurate for "project management software". It is badly wrong for your own brand name, and confusing the two is why people either give up too early or expect miracles.

Here is real evidence for the fast case, including the part that makes it less exciting than it sounds.

The evidence: four pages, two days

On Monday 31 August 2026, four products were listed on NoonLaunch. By Wednesday 2 September, all four listing pages were on the first page of Google when you searched the product's name.

Disclosure before the numbers: we run NoonLaunch, and these are our own customers' listings, shown with their permission. The positions below are Google Search Console averages, not screenshots, for reasons explained further down.

Page one in every case. Top of the page in two of them.

The strongest one

Search "imw invoice" and the listing page is the first organic result, above the product's own listing on the Apple App Store. Google's own snippet stamps it as days old.

That relationship, one result sitting above another on the same page, is the useful part. It is not affected by personalisation the way an absolute position number is.

And the weakest one

Google results for bookmash showing the NoonLaunch listing mid page, alongside a podcast, a download site and a competing launch board

Bookmash averages 7.5, which is the bottom half of page one, sitting between an unrelated podcast, an old download aggregator and a competing launch board that also ranks for the name. Showing this one matters. A case study that only shows the best result is not a case study.

Now the part that makes it less exciting

Add up the impressions column. Ten impressions and two clicks, across these listings, in that first week.

Not a typo. Ten.

This is the thing nobody tells you about fast rankings, and it is the whole reason "how long does it take to rank" is the wrong question on its own. Ranking first for a query nobody searches earns you nothing.

Nobody was searching "bookmash" in the first week of its existence, because nobody had heard of Bookmash. The page ranked almost instantly and the demand simply was not there yet. The flat line in that chart before the spike is not underperformance, it is the page not existing before 16 August.

So why was it fast?

Four things make a brand-name query rank quickly, and none of them are tricks.

  1. No competition. This is the big one. Nobody else is trying to rank for "bookmash". You are competing against coincidental matches, not against other companies with budgets.

  2. The name is in the page title. Google's job on a brand query is easy when the title says the brand.

  3. The page is on a domain Google already crawls. A new page on an established site gets discovered in days. The same page on a brand new domain waits weeks.

  4. It is internally linked. The listing was linked from a homepage and a category page from day one, so there was a crawl path to it immediately.

Notice that three of those four are about the host domain, not the page. That is why a directory listing, a launch board page, or a guest post can rank for your name faster than your own new website can.

If you are asking the question because you launched something and nothing is happening, this table is the answer. Check which query you are measuring before concluding that SEO does not work.

What ranking for your own name is actually worth

It is worth something, just not traffic on day three.

You have claimed the slot. When someone hears your product mentioned on a podcast, sees it in a newsletter, or gets it recommended in a Slack, they type the name into Google. On that day, what they find is a real listing page rather than a download aggregator that scraped your name years ago.

Look again at the Bookmash results. Without a listing page, the first things a curious person finds for that name are a podcast, a radio segment and an old download site. Owning a page-one result for your own name is defensive, and defence is worth having.

What it is not is a traffic strategy. For traffic you need to rank for the query people type before they know your name, and that is a different job entirely. How we measured this

Being clear about method, because the numbers are small and small numbers deserve more scrutiny, not less.

  • Positions are Google Search Console averages for 31 August to 3 September, not screenshot positions. Screenshots are personalised and geolocated and consistently flatter: the PIG PR screenshot shows first place where Search Console says 5.4 on average.

  • IMW Invoice's 2.5 is page level, taken from the Pages report, because its query was too rare for Search Console to show in the Queries report at all. Google hides very rare queries. If a query is missing there, check the Pages tab.

  • Four listings, one launch week. These are examples, not a study.

  • The screenshots above are unedited. Nothing has been cropped to move a result up the page.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to rank on Google for a new website?

For your own brand or product name, days to a few weeks once the page is indexed. For competitive keywords, six months or more on a brand new domain, because you are competing with sites that have years of links and history.

How long does it take Google to index a new page?

On a domain Google already crawls regularly, often one to three days. The listings above were showing in results within two days. On a brand new domain with no inbound links it can take weeks, which is why submitting a sitemap and getting one or two real links matters early.

Why am I ranking but getting no traffic?

Almost always because the query has no search volume. Ranking first for a phrase nobody types produces nothing, as the eighteen impressions above show. Check impressions in Search Console, not just position.

Does a directory listing rank faster than my own site?

Often yes, for your own name, because the directory's domain is already crawled and trusted while yours is new. That is a real short-term advantage and it is also why those listings show up above brand new company sites.

How long until I rank for a competitive keyword?

Plan for six months or more, and expect it to need a page written specifically for that keyword rather than a listing or a homepage.
